In a powerful display of solidarity, 617 civil society organizations from 100 countries worldwide, including organization “Women's Voices in Action," have signed an open letter ahead of the annual United Nations Security Council Open Debates on Women, Peace, and Security on October 25, 2023. This letter, organized by the NGO Working Group on Women, Peace, and Security, calls on all member states to take action and ensure the full, equal, meaningful, and safe participation of women in all aspects of peace and security.
The participation of women in peace processes remains unacceptably low and is decreasing even in UN-supported peace processes. Meanwhile, trust in the UN and the Security Council regarding the protection and support of these rights has been fundamentally shaken by growing geopolitical divisions and russia's invasion of Ukraine.
It is crucial to adhere to four key principles: "full," "equal," "meaningful," and "safe" participation of women. Without protecting and supporting their rights, we risk reinforcing patriarchal norms and depriving women of the opportunity to participate in shaping the future of our world.
The open letter emphasizes the urgent need for the inclusion of women at all levels and stages of decision-making. It underscores the application of a zero-tolerance approach to any form of intimidation or repression against women human rights defenders, peacebuilders, and civil society.
The open letter is available in several languages and can be freely distributed among colleagues and policymakers. Global support for these important messages underscores the significance of women's voices in conflict resolution and peacebuilding.
This is a call to the United Nations Security Council and all member states. Collective action on this path is a crucial step towards ensuring sustainable peace and equality.
